Nepal / Katmandu / Lele Village (2016)

On April 25, 2015, there was an earthquake of 7.8 occurred in Kathmandu and 10,000 lost their lives. More than 20,000 people were injured, thousands of buildings were destroyed or damaged seriously. Among the damaged buildings, there were thousands of schools. Consequently, children of Katmandu had to continue their education in an unsafe building or they could not go to school at all.

For this reason, the primary purpose of this project is to enable children to continue their education life. The volunteer team built a primary school in the village of Lele, which is 24 km away from Kathmandu. Lele is mostly inhabited by Tamang community that is the lowest strata of the caste system.

Through the reconstruction of this school, WHR ensures access to 1 nursery class and two primary education classes. Furthermore, all the educational materials for children were provided by WHR and its partners (library, books, notebooks, pencil sets, bags, etc.).

Other than assisting the construction team with the school construction, the team organized a number of psychoeducation workshops on violence and omission and harassment for the community.

The local community gave a major support to the WHR team at the construction of the school. In today's modern technology, the target has been reached by using primitive methods.

Project Period: August 1-21, 2016 (30 days), Project Manager: Ayten Zara, Project Technical Support Person: Sinan Kaan Yerli, Volunteers: Esra Zırhlıoğlu, Dilan Bozdağ, Sena Seçkin, Başak Kırık, Can J. Page, Bilge Irmak Yerli.
